WATCH: Likely landslide victims denied assistance again

A couple whose home was destroyed by a landslide in Likely, B.C. has appealed and been denied emergency disaster assistance.

Joanne Campbell and Ron Woosley lost almost everything when a beaver dam burst on an upstream lake last month, sending thousands of cubic metres of debris and mud straight into their home.

They were forced to escape in their boat when the slide came down. Fifteen other homes were cut off.

They applied for disaster assistance with Emergency BC but were denied. Their appeal was denied as well.

“My understanding is because it was only one family that was hit by the disaster rather than the community, that’s why they are denying us,” says Campbell.

Campbell says the letter from the government was not clear about the reason for denying their appeal.

“I am probably not thinking totally clear about stuff, but their mumbo jumbo did not really explain to me why they denied us,” she says.

The family is currently staying in a trailer that was temporarily put on the property and does not have the money to rebuild.
