EDMONTON — When you head out for the football game Friday night, don’t forget to bring along a donation for the food bank.

The game on Friday is Purolator Tackle Hunger Night. Fans are asked to bring non-perishable food or cash donations to the game to support Edmonton’s Food Bank.

“I know Edmonton fans, Eskimo fans, always step up when there’s a call to duty,” said Eskimos President and CEO Len Rhodes. “It’s going to be our biggest game, going to be the largest crowd in the CFL so far this season. Let’s do it.”

Mayor Don Iveson also proclaimed the long weekend (July 31 to August 3) as Edmonton’s Food Bank Weekend in support of the game and the Heritage Festival, two of the organization’s largest annual food drive and fundraising events.

“We’re looking for any non-perishable food item,” said Marjorie Bencz, executive director of the Edmonton Food Bank. “Things like baby formula, pastas, canned meats, canned vegetables, canned fruits – those items are all appreciated. And, of course, monetary donations do help us out because we’re able to buy food that we need as well as certain items we want to be able to put in our hampers like eggs.”

Kick-off is 7 p.m. at Commonwealth Stadium.
