TORONTO – The Canadian Press has been asking entertainment personalities to share their thoughts on Sunday’s Academy Awards. Today, bestselling novelist Robert Harris talks about the adapted screenplay nod for “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.” Harris knows a thing or two about the craft. He helped turn his 2007 book, “The Ghost,” into the 2010 film “The Ghost Writer,” with help from legendary director Roman Polanski. He’s currently at work on the screenplay for his latest page-turner “The Fear Index.” Oh yes, and he’s a huge fan of “Tinker” author John le Carre.

“I like the ‘Tinker Tailor’ adaptation. I think that would be a worthy winner … I think that it was well done. It’s an enormously complex book and I think they caught something of the spirit of it,” said Harris.
“I didn’t think it was technically possible to get that novel into a screenplay and they managed it. I mean there were certain leaps of faith that are required of the audience and some people would be absolutely baffled by it. But frankly, a lot of people were baffled by a 10-hour version of it (a TV miniseries done in 1979) let alone a two hour.”
