Canadian Forces reservist dies during training at CFB Shilo, Manitoba

WINNIPEG — An investigation is being conducted after a Canadian soldier died Saturday during training at a base in Shilo, Manitoba. Officials with CFB shilo tell Global News no weapons or vehicles were involved in the death. The soldier collapsed while training.

Pte. Kirby Tott was taking his basic Reserve Infantry training with the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre’s detachment at CFB Shilo when he died suddenly, the Department of National Defence said in a statement Sunday evening.

The Department of National Defence said an investigating has been launched, which is standard procedure when a soldier dies. An autopsy will be conducted. The cause of death has not been released.

Minister of National Defence Jason Kenney issued a statement Sunday night following the death of Tott.

“I was saddened to hear of the death of Pte. Kirby Tott while he was conducting training at CFB Shilo on Saturday,” Kenney said.

“On behalf of all Canadian Armed Forces personnel, I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Pte. Tott and to those affected by this tragedy.”

Tott joined the Canadian Armed Forces as a reservist with the Rocky Mountain Rangers in Prince George, B.C., in 2012.

Canada’s top general also issued a statement offering condolences to the family and friends of Tott.

“This sad event reminds me that a loss of life can occur as easily at home as overseas,” Gen. Jonathan Vance said in a statement. “Regardless of the instance, I have always been proud of how we, as members of the CAF, take care of one another in these difficult times. In the days and weeks ahead, my thoughts and prayers will be with those closest to Pt.e Tott. I assure you that we will be here for you.”
