An 84-year-old man smashed his SUV into a Nanaimo Tim Horton’s today. It happened at 8 a.m. by the entrance to Brooks Landing Mall.
According to Nanaimo RCMP, the man’s vehicle kept hitting the side of a pickup truck parked in the parking lot.
The impact was so severe, it eventually ripped the rear axle of the truck.
From there, the man’s SUV continued striking the side wall of the Tim Horton’s until it flipped over. The crash was so loud that customers said it caused the building to shake.
BC Ambulance responded to the scene to help the elderly driver. He was removed from the vehicle and taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital with a head injury. There are no updates on the extent of his injuries.
“It is only early in the investigation but it is possible a medical situation was at play causing the driver to accelerate and lose control of his vehicle,” said Nanaimo RCMP Constable Gary O’Brien.
An RCMP Traffic analyst was on scene for several hours, leaving the parking lot temporally closed while the investigation continues.
