For six seasons and two movies Kim Cattrall relished playing Samantha Jones, a woman whose sexual appetite was matched only by her self-confidence. But variety is the spice of life (Samantha would agree, non?) and that’s why the actress has been having such a great time playing Davina Jackson on Sensitive Skin. Where Samantha had self-awareness in spades, Davina is struggling to find her place in the world and what she wants – which is exactly what drew Kim to the material.
“I wanted to tell a story about a woman who had doubts,” Cattrall explained recently when we caught up with her filming season two of Sensitive Skin on the Toronto Islands. “I also wanted to challenge the industry’s idea of what a woman of a certain age is.” While Sensitive Skin follows one woman’s journey, the actress is quick to say the show is not just for female viewers. “It’s not just a female story,” she said. “It’s a human story and it’s about those questions we pose ourselves when we’re alone in bed, I wanted to pose those questions.”
One of the questions surrounding season two is if Davina will still be married, single or a widow? As you may recall from the first season finale, she and estranged husband Al appeared headed for a reconciliation when he suffered a medical emergency. So does Al survive? Cattrall is not offering any spoilers, saying only that her character is “embracing another part of her life.”
Well she is certainly embracing her life right now. Like Samantha (and possibly Davina?) Ms. Cattrall is single and she’s more than okay with it. “It sounds ridiculous in the time that we live in, but women are still asking themelves that question: ‘who am I if I’m not a mother, who am I if I’m not a wife?’ Well, you’re you!”
Sensitive Skin will premiere on HBO Canada in 2016.
