N.B. government says delay in processing medicare cards has been addressed

FREDERICTON – An official with New Brunswick’s Health Department says a backlog of renewals for provincial medicare cards has been addressed.

Lynn St.-Pierre-Ellis, an associate deputy minister, says the backlog affecting health cards that expired at the end of January occurred as a result of an extended Christmas break.

She said four people who process 25,000 renewals each month took a few extra days off as part of the Conservative government’s cost-cutting efforts.

St.-Pierre-Ellis says extra employees were assigned to clear the backlog last week, and those cards should all be delivered in the mail by next week.

Liberal Health critic Bill Fraser says the delays are unacceptable and add undue stress to people worried if their health care will be covered.

St.-Pierre-Ellis says anyone who may have received a bill can submit it for reimbursement.
