TORONTO – Dashboard cameras in police cars usually capture close calls involving the officer behind the wheel.
In most cases, however, those close calls aren’t with acts of nature.
Officer Mark Rodriguez of the Gautier Police Department in Mississippi was driving down Interstate-10 Monday when a powerful bolt of lightning slammed into the ground just feet from his cruiser.
While a storm system was moving through the Gautier area Monday night, the weather was relatively calm in the moments before the lightning struck.
Of course, there are no guarantees when it comes to predicting where and when lightning will strike.
The only sign of damage from the lightning strike was a missing chunk of concrete on the bridge Officer Rodriguez happened to be driving over.
For his part, Rodriguez was unharmed – though his ears were likely ringing for some time after that close call with Mother Nature.
