SASKATOON – One of the longest-running marathons in the country was held in Saskatoon Sunday. The 37th annual Saskatchewan Marathon drew thousands of participants from all over the world.
“We have runners from Ukraine, Germany, from all through the U.S., and every province in Canada,” explained Peter Goode, president of the Saskatoon Road Runners Association which hosted the race.
“Each year it seems to be getting more popular.”

Ukrainian native Sergii Vashurin won the marathon with a time of 2:37:55. The top three racers came within 13 minutes of each other.
The women’s was Saskatoon’s very own Erin Gardiner in a time of 3:00:21.
More than 760 students trained for ten weeks for the marafun portion of the event, running about four kilometres per week. On Sunday, they ran their final 2.2 kilometres to complete the marathon.
Along with several other dedicated coaches, marathon Olympian Silvia Ruegger oversaw 45 children in St. George Community School’s running and reading club, who trained for 32 weeks in preparation.
“When they started, they couldn’t run probably a minute. To be here and to see them achieve their dreams is really very powerful,” Ruegger explained.
