VANCOUVER – A tiny kitten found tossed in a dumpster needs your help to recover.

Named Ella, the grey kitten, believed to be only five weeks old, was found in a metal recycling dumpster in a community north of Pemberton. She was brought to the Squamish SPCA and was found to be suffering from what appears to be crush injuries to her front feet. She also has a dislocated vertebrae at the base of her tail, and will likely need several amputation surgeries among other medical care.

Despite what she has been through in her short life, staff at the SPCA says she has the heart – and the roar – of a lion.

“Ella likes to roar like a lion – she thinks she’s that tough – and she loves to snuggle with you in her blankie,” said SPCA Squamish Valley Branch manager Marika Donnelly. “She’s a real sweetheart. We just want her to have a chance to live out the rest of her nine lives without pain and hopefully, we can give her a much better second start.”

It is expected Ella’s entire left leg will need to be amputated, along with her tail and a toe on her right foot that is dislocated and broken.

“This little spark plug has a ton of fighting spirit,” said Donnelly. “She’s been through a whole lot in her short little life, but her prognosis is good – she is too small to have surgery right now but we’re managing her pain and fighting infection with antibiotics.”

Ella’s medical care costs are expected to reach $6,750.

If you can help pay for Ella’s care, go to spca.bc.ca/medicalemergency or drop by the branch in person, at 39901 Government Rd., Squamish (in the municipal works yard).

The BC SPCA is also looking for any information on Ella’s previous owner or owners.
