REGINA – Temporary layoffs were announced for around 40 to 50 employees at the Evraz steel plant in Regina

This announcement comes shortly after a $200 million expansion was announced for the facility.

In a statement from Evraz North America, they say the layoffs are to “align crew levels with production activity, which is currently lower due to reduced steel demand associated with substantially lower oil drilling activity.”

Evraz also stated that it will continue to monitor the oil market and expects to bring back employees as work becomes available.

The temporary layoffs are set to take place on May 17 with the expansion still moving forward.
