TORONTO – Nintendo is reviving its World Championship after 25 years.

The company announced Wednesday fans will once again have the chance to battle for the title of Nintendo champion at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles.

“For the first time in 25 years, some of Nintendo’s biggest fans will get to go head-to-head in a gaming showdown for the ages,” according to Nintendo’s E3 site.

Nintendo has yet to announce which games will be included in the contest – but if they want to get real nostalgic they might include Super Mario Bros., Rad Racer, or Tetris, which were all included in the original tournament.

The last time Nintendo held a world championship was in 1990, the year after The Wizarda movie that centered around a boy with a gift for playing video games – debuted in theatres.

Back then, the tournament was based on scoring points in all three games within a time limit of six minutes. Three different age groups – 11 and under, 12 to 17, and 18 and over – competed for the age group title.

It’s unclear if this year’s competition will follow the same format.

Sadly for Canadian Nintendo fans, the contest appears to be open to U.S. residents only.

The competition starts on May 30 at Best Buy locations across the U.S. The winner will compete in the World Competition on June 16 at E3.
