Canada goose shot with arrow proving hard to catch in Calgary park

CALGARY – An injured goose has Calgarians rallying together to try and help it, after the bird was spotted in Fish Creek Park with an arrow through its leg.

“Somebody shot that goose with an arrow. It’s a yellow arrow, sticking one side to the other side,” said Carlos Mouta.

The Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society has attempted to catch the goose three times. The animal will have to be netted, and that’s proving difficult.

“We did send out some volunteers to try and capture the goose, but unfortunately that goose is fully-flighted so its wings have not been affected by the wound, so it’s very difficult to capture a wild animal that doesn’t have any mobility issues,” said society spokesperson Andrea Hunt.

The maximum penalty for anyone caught hunting in the off-season is a $50,000 fine or one year in jail.

Many people just want to see the goose saved.

“We always obviously find it distressing to find any animal in distress, but the public also finds it very distressing to find animals that are injured—that they want to help but are unable to do so.”

Fish and Wildlife officials said Tuesday their department is not “actively pursuing the goose” but that the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society is still trying to capture it.

Anyone with information on how the goose was shot is asked to call the Report A Poacher line at 1-800-642-3800.
