Winnipeg – Police are investigating a fatal stabbing Friday night, claiming the life of a 27-year-old.

Officers were called to the 700 block of Selkirk Avenue just before 11:00 p.m. and discovered a man suffering from serious stab wounds.

The victim’s mom says her son, Godfrey, was stabbed in the heart.

“I got a call from my son about 11:15, saying Mom, you need to come down here and pick me up, Godfrey got stabbed,” Evelyn Hayden told Global News Saturday morning.

Hayden was at the home Saturday, looking at the last spot her son was alive, “I miss him with all my heart, I love him,” she said.

Police are not confirming the victim’s identity at this time.  They only said an adult male was found on Selkirk Avenue and died from injuries. An autopsy is pending.

When officers arrived, paramedics had yet to respond so police administered first aid.

“Officers came into contact with the male.  Our members did administer first aid, and when paramedics arrived, they took over and carried on from there,” Jason Michaelyshen said Saturday.  Paramedics transported the victim, Godfrey Hayden, to hospital. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

The homicide unit was called to the scene Friday night and investigators are optimistic an arrest will be made shortly.  Interviews are taking place to determine how the crime unfolded.  Selkirk Avenue was shut down overnight and late Saturday morning, investigators remained on scene, looking for clues in the city’s fifth homicide of 2015.

As for the victim’s mother, “I’m just upset that somebody had to take his life like that.  You know, there is a saying in this world, what goes around comes around, and with all fairness and justice, I hope they catch whoever did this,” Hayden explained.

No arrests have been made at this time.  The investigation continues.
