WINNIPEG — Now that the snow has all but melted in Manitoba, the province says the risk of spring flooding is low.
“We have good news compared to what we have been looking at in the past,” said Fisaha Unduche, the province’s flood forecaster.
The March flood outlook does say a major rain or snowstorm could cause some localized flooding.
At this point the Red River is low enough the Floodway gates likely won’t have to be used.
The Portage Diversion was put into action in an effort to reduce the risk of ice jams downstream from Portage la Prairie.
The province says ice breaking done along the north Red River has greatly reduced the risk of ice jams.
Lake St.Martin is considered to be at flooding stage now. The province says vulnerable communities are protected however flooding in low lying farm land could happen until mid-July.
