Saskatchewan Huskie Jordian Farahani pursuing pro soccer career

Watch above: Former Saskatchewan Huskie centre back Jordian Farahan is pursuing a pro career after signing with Icelandic soccer club IF Höttur. Jack Haskins looks at what the future holds for Farahan.

SASKATOON – His five year tenure with the Saskatchewan Huskies came to an end this past fall, but in just over a month from now, Jordian Farahani will venture to Iceland to start a new chapter in his soccer career.

The 25-year-old centre back doesn’t know a whole lot about the Iceland yet, but Farahani does know that he has an opportunity to prove that he has what it takes to play professional soccer.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“If I do have success and I do well, it’s going to open doors to other European markets.” said Farahani. “Denmark and Norway, there are strong ties with Icelandic players going over to those leagues.”

The quality of soccer in Iceland is well respected. Iceland is 36th on UEFA’s rankings for club competitions, which is remarkable considering Iceland’s population is less than 340,000 people.

Farahani will suit up for IF Höttur of Iceland’s division 2 soccer league, which is considered semi-pro soccer by European standards, even though the league’s players get paid.

Getting paid to play the sport he loves has been a dream for Farahani since he was five years old. Farahani believes that playing this summer in Iceland could open professional opportunities in bigger European soccer markets.

“There’s ample opportunity out there, but the tough part is getting your foot in the door.”

Farahani certainly has his foot in the door, but this summer he plans on grabbing a hold of the frame and swinging the door wide open. Farahani’s dream is to play pro soccer, and at the age of 25, this might be his last chance to capture the attention of a professional soccer club.
