Vaudreuil mother accused of murdering daughter to stand trial

VALLEYFIELD — Claudia Flores-Jiminez stood in the prisoner’s box at the Valleyfield Courthouse Friday with a blank look on her face.

The 34-year-old showed no emotion and made no eye contact with anyone in court.

In a hearing that lasted about two minutes, Flores-Jiminez found out she will have to face a judge for the first-degree murder of her seven-year-old daughter.

Psychiatrist Joel Watts from the Pinel Institute said he has found Flores-Jiminez mentally fit to stand trial.

“The psychiatrist will not decide if she’s criminally responsible for what was done, they will decide if she’s able to understand the proceedings,” said legal analyst Philip Schneider.

Last week, police allege the mother stabbed her daughter to death inside the family home on Leo-Gravelle Street in Vaudreuil-Dorion.

She then allegedly attempted suicide.

Quebec provincial police said they believe the killing was planned and deliberate.

Prosecutor Pierre-Olivier Gagnon said the girl’s father, Roberto Cea-Campo, is expected to testify for the crown when the case proceeds to trial.

It’s believed Cea-Campo was inside the home at some point the night of the alleged crime.

“He’s a witness in our file,” confirmed Gagnon.

Defence attorney Martin Pilotte said his client is having a difficult time dealing with the tragic event.

“She’s suffering this morning, she’s suffering about the death of her daughter,” Pilotte said.

Pilotte told reporters Flores-Jiminez has suffered from mental health problems in the past.

He refused to elaborate if the she currently suffers from any sort of illness.
