Prime Minister Stephen Harper will soon have a new chief spokesman — Jason MacDonald is stepping away from the job.
Senior sources have confirmed to Global News Harper’s director of communications will resign next week.
Rob Nicol, a senior executive at Canadian Tire, has been confirmed as MacDonald’s replacement.

Nicol’s background in politics includes work as a senior staff member for former Ontario Progressive Conservative premier Mike Harris.

According to the sources, MacDonald wants to spend more time with his family. MacDonald has young twin daughters, and apparently will be taking a private-sector position. He has been on the job since 2013.
MacDonald’s departure comes on the heels of former foreign affairs minister John Baird’s exit earlier this month.
Canada’s next scheduled federal election is just eight months away.
