WATCH: Video released shows dumb near-misses at UK rail crossings

If ever you needed more encouragement to play it safe at rail crossings, this video courtesy of UK’s transit police should do the trick.

A newly-released montage from the British Transport Police (BTP) shows some of the closest calls from the past year when motorists and pedestrians tried their luck at rail crossings – and barely avoided disaster.

It’s all part of a social media campaign called #LevelBest, which hopes to encourage commuters to take more care at rail crossings.

Messages like “don’t risk your life for 5 minutes” are posted along with photos and videos like the one above, showing just how close some people came to being struck by trains when they ignored warning signs at level crossings.

The BTP have also posted additional photos and videos on their Facebook and Twitter pages.

According to statistics released by the BTP and England’s National Rail Network, six pedestrians and two motorists lost their lives as a result of accidents at rail crossings in the UK in the past year.

“All too often people get into the habit of taking risks at crossings. Our message is simple – use crossings safely,” BTP inspector Becky Warren said in a press release.

“It may be tempting to jump a light to shave a minute or two off your journey, but every time you do, you endanger your life and the lives of other road and rail users.”
