No charges laid in killing of 17-year-old robber

WINNIPEG – A 38-year-old man who stabbed and killed a teen during a robbery won’t be charged, Winnipeg police say.

The man was acting in self-defence when he stabbed two young men, one fatally, in April, police said Friday.

The 17-year-old was found injured on the road near Dufferin Avenue and Salter Street shortly after 11 p.m. on April 19.

The youth, who had stab wounds to his upper body, was taken to hospital, where he later died.

An 18-year-old man who had also been stabbed was found nearby and taken to hospital in critical condition; he survived.

The homicide unit investigated and allege the two young men had tried to rob a 38-year-old man, who pulled out a weapon and stabbed his attackers before fleeing.

The man turned himself in to police shortly after the stabbings and was arrested. However, he was released on the advice of the Crown attorney consulted in the case. The Crown has now advised that no charges will be laid against the man.
