EDMONTON — Crews are cleaning up after a Canadian Pacific train derailed in Lake Louise early Saturday morning.

RCMP say five train cars came off the track in the village’s downtown around 1:30 a.m. One of the cars ended up hanging over  the edge of a bridge across the Pipe Stone River, officers said.

The train cars that left the track were empty. No injuries were reported.

Railway spokeswoman Breanne Feigel says the derailed cars last contained sulphur.

“We take all incidents like this quite seriously,” Feigel said, noting that police, transportation officials and Parks Canada staff were all notified.

RCMP say train was travelling very slowly at the time, as the train was passing through a transfer station. The cause is still under investigation, but RCMP believe a mechanical issue with one of the cars led to the derailment.

Feigel says the derailment has been cleared and the track has since reopened.
