MONTREAL – The federal government has announced that the bridge set to replace the Champlain span will not be given a different name.
Infrastructure minister Denis Lebel confirmed that the new bridge will retain its original name.
Earlier in the year, there had been talks of naming it after former Habs great Maurice Richard.
But the hockey legend’s family wasn’t too thrilled with the suggestion and the idea was benched.

Construction on the new Champlain bridge begins in 2015.
The structure is expected to be opened in 2018.
