WATCH: Elderly woman reportedly hit by two cars in Oliver, dies

Update: Highway 97 in Oliver has reopened in both directions following a closure due to a fatal accident.

OLIVER, B.C. – An elderly woman has died after succumbing to her injuries following a pedestrian crash in Oliver Tuesday morning. According to Kelowna RCMP, the woman – described as an elderly Caucasian female – was trying to cross Main Street when she was struck by a northbound vehicle. Constable Kris Clark says while she was laying on the road after that hit, another vehicle, also northbound, appears to have struck her.

“Initial investigation represents that the driver of the northbound vehicle stopped with the intent to render assistance. Shortly after this initial contact and before the driver of the northbound vehicle could make contact with the pedestrian a second vehicle which was also northbound, appears to have struck the pedestrian,” says Clark.

He adds, the second vehicle – described as an older late 1980’s model white Chevrolet pickup – continued northbound from the intersection.

Helen Leal knew the victim and says she was disabled and used a walker.

“Everybody knew her, she was always walking around town and she’s going to be sadly missed,” says Leal.

“She was always out early in the mornings. Being disabled, she didn’t sleep well and she used to love going for walks. We’d see her two to three times a day,” says Leal.

On Facebook, people have said the victim was well-known in the community.

“Police are looking to speak with the driver of this vehicle or any witnesses who may have been in the vicinity of this incident,” says Clark.

Crews were called at about 6:21 a.m. to respond to a fatal pedestrian-involved collision at the intersection of Fairview Road and Highway 97. The Highway remains closed with detours in effect.
