EDMONTON — A 16-year-old student is recovering in hospital after being pulled out of the pool at Eastglen Leisure Centre Wednesday afternoon.

Jason Darrah with the City of Edmonton says the girl was recovered from the pool by lifeguards around 2:40 p.m. The teen was in the pool as part of a school-led activity. Jane Sterling with the Edmonton Public School Board says the girl’s Phys-Ed class was playing underwater hockey at the time.

Sterling says a lifeguard immediately responded when the girl was found unconscious under the water. The lifeguard pulled her out of the pool and began CPR. After a few compressions the girl coughed up water and began breathing, according to Sterling.

The teen was speaking when EMS crews arrived, Darrah said. She was taken to the Stollery Children’s Hospital in serious, but stable condition, according to Alberta Health Services.

The teen is a student at Eastglen High School. Sterling says the girl will likely be back in class Thursday.
