Building manager David Ursu says he was in the lobby around 9 p.m. on Sunday when he saw a man stumbling up to the front door.

The man was so badly hurt, it took Ursu a minute to realize who he was.

The retired professor was just metres from the front doors when a man approached him and asked if he had a spare cigarette.

Ursu says the senior said he doesn’t smoke and told the man he shouldn’t either.
