CORRECTION: The Nova Scotia Justice Department has clarified that the man mistakenly released was awaiting trial on the charges listed below, and has not been convicted.

HALIFAX – The Burnside jail in Dartmouth has mistakenly released a 22-year-old man who was waiting to be tried on charges including attempted murder and robbery.

The Nova Scotia Justice Department says Eliahs Knudsen Kent was wrongly released from the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility.

Kent was being held on remand and awaiting trial.

He was to appear in court next week.

Police are searching for him and the department says an internal investigation is underway to find out what happened, the results of which will be made public.

This is not the first time in recent years that an inmate has been mistakenly released from the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility.

In November 2010, the jail prematurely released Vernon Martell, who was serving time for theft.

Martell was out of custody for five days before turning himself in to police.

At the time, the Justice Department attributed the mistake to clerical errors.
