Bus riders may not be able to use Compass Card to ‘tap out’

VANCOUVER – It appears there may be more problems for Translink’s already troubled Compass Card.

Translink now says bus riders may not have to ‘tap out’ at the end of a bus ride, at least for the first little while, because of concerns passengers will forget and potentially get billed a higher fare than the distance they travelled.

The tap out function calculates the distance of a trip and determines how many zones a rider would have to pay.

This is just the latest in a series of problems for the $194-million Compass Card program, which is already more than a year behind schedule.

Faregates were installed years ago with much fanfare, complete with scanners that were meant to deter fare evaders with one simple tap of a Compass Card.

The cards were handed out to 85,000 riders, and beta-testing was supposed to wrap up in October 2013.
