Calgary- The Calgary Police Service’s hate crimes unit has been called to an apartment complex in the southeast part of the city after a disturbing discovery.
Several residents at Elliston Park condo complex reported a very strong smell in the hallways on one of the building’s floors Wednesday.
Deborah Great says it didn’t take fire fighters long to figure out where the overwhelming stench was coming from.
“The one knelt down and said, ‘Oh this carpet is saturated with gasoline,’” Great recounts. “Gasoline in the carpet. How did that get there?”
Police were called to the building and investigators are now trying to determine how gasoline ended up outside the front doors of three suites.
Investigators believe that the gasoline was poured sometime after midnight on Oct. 8.
Two out of the three tenants affected are from Somalia, which prompted police to investigate whether they were intentionally targeted.
One of the tenants that lives in the suite where gasoline was poured told Global News that it’s scary and that he feels helpless.
There are security cameras installed in the building but so far there is no suspicious activity on tape.
Tenants like Deborah Great are outraged that it could be someone living in the building.
“We have people from everywhere here. We get along lovely,” she says. “I just can’t imagine who would do such a thing, I just can’t imagine it.”
The condo board will now be looking at ways to increase security in and outside of the building.
