TORONTO — Canadian actor Ryan Gosling and his girlfriend, actress Eva Mendes, named their baby Esmeralda Amada Gosling.
According to a birth certificate obtained by TMZ, the couple’s daughter was born Sept. 12 at 10:22 a.m. at the Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California.
The significance of the names to the parents are not known. Mendes’ parents are Juan and Eva and Gosling’s parents are Thomas and Donna.
Baby Name Wizard says Esmeralda is a Spanish name taken from the word meaning “emerald.” (It is also the name of Quasimodo’s love interest in The Hunchback of Notre Dame.)
According to Our Baby Namer, Amada is a Spanish word meaning “beloved.” Last year, only 12 girls and five boys in the U.S. were given the name.
It is also the name of the oldest Egyptian temple in Nubia and the name of Mendes’ character in 2007’s We Own the Night.
