CALGARY – A convicted criminal arrested in Calgary last year will spend 18 months behind bars after pleading guilty to immigration fraud.

Daniel Miller, also known as Daniel Arthur Dengler Jr., has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after he admitted to three charges under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

The Canada Border Service Agency launched an investigation into Miller in October of 2013 after he was arrested by Calgary police.

They discovered he had come to Canada using documents obtained fraudulently, and had previously been convicted of criminal offences in New York and California.

“The CBSA will not tolerate foreign nationals who abuse the integrity of our immigration law,” says Acting Regional Director General Kim Scoville. “When our officers learn of potential fraudulent activity, they will investigate further, and where possible, pursue prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.”

The CBSA says the sentence handed down to Miller is one of the most significant rendered in Alberta for this type of offence.
