WINNIPEG – Ryan James Gabourie, who broke into homes and sexually assaulted children in their beds, will be released from jail Monday.

Gabourie, 32, is considered at high risk to offend against children again, police warned in a public notification. Both boys and girls are at risk, the news release said.

He expected to live in Winnipeg after he’s released from the Headingley Correctional Institution.

Gabourie is five-foot-eight and about 200 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes.

He participated in some sex offender treatment in prison but is still considered a high risk.

Gabourie’s criminal record includes five counts of sexual assault, five counts of breaking into homes to commit sexual assault, and possessing child pornography.

Gabourie sexually assaulted five boys aged five to 11 after he went into their homes through unlocked windows or doors. He molested the boys in their own beds while their families slept nearby.

He also went into the homes of another boy and girl but was noticed before he committed any other offences.

Gabourie didn’t know his victims but chose homes based on the visibility of toys in the yard or through windows, police said.

He was released earlier this year but returned to prison on Jan. 12, three days after his release, after he was caught contacting another convicted sex offender, which violated the terms of his release. That followed a previous release on Nov. 13, 2012, which ended the next day when he was seen using a computer and the Internet, breaching the terms of his release.

Before that, he was released following a seven-year prison term but re-arrested seven days later, on June 28, 2012, after he breached his curfew and the condition that he not possess or operate a device with Internet access.

The terms of Gabourie’s current release include prohibitions on:

  • Going to a public park or public swimming area where children under 14 years old are present or can reasonably be expected to be present;
  • Going to daycare centres, schoolyards, playgrounds or community centres;
  • Contacting or communicating with children younger than 16, except through unavoidable encounters in public places or as allowed by his probation officer in writing and in advance; and
  • Possessing a computer or having Internet access.

He also is under curfew from 10 p.m. to 9 a.m., except in emergencies or when his probation officer gives permission in writing and in advance.
