WINNIPEG – A high-risk sex offender who broke into children’s homes and assaulted them in their beds is expected to live in Winnipeg, police say.

Ryan James Gabourie, 32, is a convicted sex offender who is considered at high risk to commit further sexual offences against both male and female children, the Manitoba Integrated High Risk Sex Offender Unit said in a news release.

Gabourie is being released from the Headingley Correctional Institute near Winnipeg on Thursday.

Gabourie previously sexually molested five boys aged five to 11 in their beds after he entered their homes through unlocked windows or doors. Their families were sleeping nearby. He also entered the homes of another boy and girl, but was caught before he committed any other offence.

All of the victims were unknown to Gabourie, who chose homes where children’s toys were in the yard or could be seen through windows.

He was convicted of sexual assault, break and enter to commit a sexual assault, possession of child pornography and break and enter with intent, the news release says.

Gabourie participated in some sex-offender treatment while imprisoned but is still considered at high risk to reoffend.

Gabourie is five-foot-eight, weighs just under 200 pounds and has brown hair and hazel eyes.

Under the conditions of his release, Gabourie is prohibited from:

attending a daycare, schoolground, playground, community centre or public park or public swimming area where children under the age of 14 could reasonably be expected to be present;

having contact or communication with people under the age of 16, except for unavoidable encounters in public places or as allowed in advance by his probation officer in writing; and

having possession of a computer or Internet access.

He’s subject to a 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. curfew, except for in verifiable medical emergencies or when he’s given special permission in writing in advance by his probation officer.

Anyone with information about Gabourie who wishes to speak to a police officer is asked to call the sex offender unit at 204-984-1888.

The last time Gabourie was released from prison, on Nov. 13, 2012, he was seen using a computer and the Internet the next day, which breached the terms of his release.

Before that, Gabourie was released after seven years in federal custody and re-arrested seven days later, on June 28, 2012, after he breached his curfew and a condition that he not possess or operate any device with Internet amenities or connections.
