WATCH: Groundskeeper Willie says “Yay” to Scottish independence

With the referendum on Scottish independence only days away, celebrities from across Scotland and the UK are lending their voices to the debate.

Now the man who The Times once called “the most instantly recognizable Scot in the world” has joined the debate – and as usual he’s angry, patriotic, and ready to take his shirt off at a moment’s notice.

G.K. Willington Esquire, better known as Groundskeeper Willie, has been a fixture on The Simpsons for nearly two decades. And whether it’s selling haggis on the street (“Chopped heart and lungs boiled in a wee sheep’s stomach! Tastes as good as it sounds!”) or pushing “Scotch-toberfest”, Willie is nothing if not a proud Scot.

Dressed in a full kilt and tartan, the groundskeeper of the Springfield Elementary School starts by saying that because the polls are so close, he doesn’t want to come down on either side, “be it the right one, or the obviously wrong one!”

“Both sides of this argument have valid points,” Willie explains. “The freedom loving heirs of the Highland tradition, and those who enjoy crawling like worms beneath British boots.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Willie then outlines some of the pro-independence points, including Scotland’s vast oil and gas reserves.

“Notice how in no country rich in oil do the men wear pants!”

Willie finishes by wondering who could lead an independent Scotland “in the grand tradition of William Wallace and Andy Murray,” before putting forth his own name.

“I’ve lived in America most of my life,” Willie says. “So I’ve seen first-hand how NOT to run a country!”

He finishes by (what else) ripping off his shirt, revealing “AYE OR DIE!” written across his chest.

“That’s not a tattoo,” Willie shouts. “It’s a birthmark!”
