Watch above: Melissa learns if she has what it takes to be a member of the Warman Fire Department
WARMAN, Sask. – For 50 years the Warman Fire Department has been serving the community in emergency situations.
It first started as a volunteer fire department made up of 12 community members that came together to raise funds for their first truck.
Today, the department is made up of 29 volunteer firefighters from varying ages and experiences.
“Everyone has a fulltime job elsewhere other than myself,” said Deputy Fire Chief Russ Austin.

They carry a radio and when the radio goes off they respond. It doesn’t matter if it’s 2 a.m. or if they’re at their job or sitting with their feet up on the deck. When the calls come in you got to go.”
Trainees looking to become part of the Warman team dedicate about eight hours weekly to training for six months.
They also go to school and take National Fire Protection Association courses one and two to complete their firefighter’s training.
With that experience they are comparable to any working firefighter in the country.
Kelvin Oom has always dreamt of being a firefighter. He moved to Warman five years ago and heard the department was recruiting.
He has been volunteering at the department for three years.
“It’s rewarding, such a great feeling to be able to give back to the community”.
To help the fire department celebrate the half a century milestone, a dinner and dance is being held at the Brian King Centre on Sept. 13.
