Does Canada need more descriptive maple syrup labels?

CALGARY – A new proposal could make it simpler for consumers to choose which maple syrup they want to buy.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is proposing changes to the Maple Products Regulations to harmonize the definition and grading system of syrup in the United States and Canada.

They want four revised colour classes and new taste descriptors.

The move would introduce more details to maple syrup labels.

For example, you could see a label that describes the maple syrup you’re about to buy as “golden with a delicate taste” or “very dark with a strong taste.”

The CFIA is inviting stakeholders to comment on the idea until September 10th, 2014.
