Cougars descend on Canmore townsite in search of food

CALGARY- While there have been numerous bear sightings throughout southern Alberta this year, parks officials say trail users also need to be aware of cougars.

The animals have become conditioned to humans, and are beginning to venture down towards the Canmore townsite during the day to hunt for food.

“They’re in town for the deer and the elk that are present, particularly in the winter time,” explains Jay Honeyman, a human wildlife conflict biologist. “They’re starting to hunt those animals within the town limits. And it starts to become concerning when we have cougars frequenting the townsite.”
