TORONTO – Twitter erupted with reaction as the NBA handed down a lifetime ban and a $2.5 million fine against Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling following racist and “hateful” comments.

Sterling’s comments were met with harsh criticism on social media, with users expressing their outrage over racial insensitivity in a sport with many black players. High-profile celebrities and basketball legends, including Magic Johnson, took to Twitter to express their disappointment in the situation.

Shortly after the NBA’s press conference, Magic Johnson tweeted, “Commissioner Silver showed great leadership in banning LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life,” adding that former and current NBA players were happy with the league’s decision.

The Clippers website also updated to show a single image reading “We are one” after the ban was made public.
