Saskatoon firefighters were quick to bring a house fire under control in the Varsity View neighbourhood Monday evening that has left several people homeless.
Officials say smoke detectors alerted four residents living in basement suites of the fire. They were able to escape unharmed. Three other occupants were not home at the time of the blaze.
Four units responded to the house fire around 8:30 p.m. in the 1300-block Temperance Street. When they arrived, heavy smoke and flames were coming from the bungalow. Crews began an aggressive attack and brought the fire under control in 18 minutes.
Crews also worked to protect a house to the west which was being threatened by the flames from the initial fire. That home suffered smoked damage.
Damage is estimated at 300-thousand dollars.
The cause of the blaze is still under investigation but officials say the fire started on the main floor.
