TORONTO — Days of Our Lives will make soap opera history this week with the first wedding of two male characters.
In the three-episode storyline, which begins Tuesday on Global, Will Horton and Sonny Kiriakis will be joined together by Marlena Evans, played by Deidre Hall.
“Thank you all for coming to this joyous celebration of love and commitment,” Marlena tells the guests gathered for the wedding.
According to NBC, the episodes have “great surprises” for fans.
Will is played by Guy Wilson, 28, who took over the role from Chandler Massey in January. Sonny is played by Freddie Smith, 26.
The characters got engaged on Valentine’s Day this year.
“I truly feel blessed to … have the opportunity to take part in something that is so important, not just in the context of the show, but on a wider scale,” Wilson told The Advocate.
“I’m thankful we’re creating something that resonates with people and makes a positive impact.”
It’s not the first same-sex marriage on a daytime drama. In 2009, Eden and Tamara tied the knot in an episode of All My Children.
Days of Our Lives airs weekdays at 1 p.m. on Global.
