CALGARY – A Calgary post-secondary school is putting the “green” in greenhouse.
SAIT Polytechnic is unveiling their new four season sustainable greenhouse, complete with the latest environmentally-friendly technology.
Soap bubbles insulate the walls of the structure, keeping it cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

For added heat in Calgary’s coldest months, solar panels and oil waste from the school’s teaching kitchen generate additional power.
The greenhouse floor and individual plant beds are warmed to varying degrees, for optimal growth.
The cedar framed structure will supply fresh ingredients for SAIT’s Highwood Dining Room and other culinary venues on campus.
Chef Instructor David Hewson says there’s no comparing locally grown food to imported alternatives.
“The nutritional value of that kind of food is going to be way higher than anything genetically engineered, that is, shipped from half way around the world,” says Hewson.
SAIT hopes to soon add a second greenhouse to their campus.
