A major summit Prime Minister Mark Carney is hosting with European Union leaders is set to conclude Friday with announcements on digital trade and academic exchanges.
Carney welcomed European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa to the Canada-EU summit in Montreal on Thursday.
While these meetings have been happening for years, this one sees Canada and the EU scaling up their efforts to deepen their commercial and diplomatic relationship.
Costa said he expects to see an agreement on digital trade finalized today, and news on programs for scientific research partnerships and university student exchanges.
Costa added Thursday he wants to see greater labour mobility between Canada and the Europe in addition to opening the door to easier student exchanges.
Culture Minister Marc Miller said Thursday any labour mobility talk in industries like film would need to include the provinces as many have their own tax credits that promote local talent.
Miller has been meeting with his European counterparts during the summit, talking about ways there could be similar regulations when it comes to promoting Canadian content on streaming services in Europe, and vice versa, alongside safeguards for children online.

“So two issues that are really important, and we’re not talking about the same exact rules potentially, but convergence and allyship with respect to large transnational companies that in some cases need to be regulated to protect kids or to promote our cultures in the face of overwhelming, monopolistic cultures, one of which is the United States, but others across the world,” Miller said in an interview.
While labour mobility in film and television production is an issue that requires further work, Miller said they are looking at ways to increase co-productions between Canada and Europe line the TV series Vikings, a Canadian-Irish co-production.
The minister said Canada already has co-production treaties with several European countries that allow joint pooling of tax credits to attract film and TV show productions.
Miller said he brought his EU counterparts to one of the promotional events for Villeneuve: The Rise of a Legend, a documentary on Quebec Formula One drier Gilles Villeneuve that premièred at the Toronto International Film Festival. He said part of that visit was to look to get the film theatrical release in Europe.
Carney, Von der Leyen and Costa all said they would like to see Canada become an “associate member” of the European Union, despite countries like Germany rejecting that term and Canadian officials avoiding that phrasing.
Conservatives have criticized the summit, noting that nine of the 28 countries in the EU have yet to ratify a decade-old trade deal with Canada.
I doubt this will fly to be honest. If they can’t ratify CETA after a decade and a few of the most powerful EU countries (Germany, France, Italy) have already said “no” then it’s doubtful this will hold water.
It’s all a bunch of fluff.
What WILL be interesting is how Trump looks at this. He may very well tariff the heck out of the EU and who knows… maybe the deal that Carney walked away from suddenly is leaked and goes public?
Glad I’m I’m close to Z than A in the alphabet of life 😂
Jimbo. Exactly right. Elbows up crowd never examined his past, failures, or read his book. Carney is screwing this country and handing it to EU.
The media used TDS hysteria as a licence to not vet Carney’s litany of lies and massively exaggerated business and negotiating prowess boasts, and to drown Poilievre out of the picture during the last election.
And the low IQ Canadian voters were too lazy to look past the obvious media smokescreen that dragged the serial liar into the PM’s office.
That’s how we got the dud running our country into the ground…. even more than Trudeau.
With Canada’s capitulation, the EU get’s to regulate and exploit our:
oil,
natural gas,
gold,
uranium,
lumber,
fishery, and water resources.
We get:
EU taxes,
EU bureaucratic control from Brussels,
Carbon tariffs on steel, aluminum, cement, etc,
An unlimited supply of third world newcomers.
Sounds like a great deal, so sign us up.
Carney was never really into Canada and intentionally torpedoed the US trade deal and will torpedo the talks going on now to hand Canada to the EU as penance for losing the UK to Brexit.
“Digital soverignty is economic soverignty and agreement with the EU reduces our dependence on the USA. Reasonable people would agree with this.”
You should be arrested for slander and misinformation.
The act of agreeing to the EU policies and regulations surrounding digital trade is thr opposite of sovereignty
“Sovereignty is the supreme, independent authority of a state or governing body to rule itself, make its own laws, and manage its territory without outside interference.”
You got this as perfectly wrong as possible, accepting rules and laws from the EU is the exact opposite of sovereignty
Also this is not a net gain for canada that has little to offer in the digital field and just allows the EU to dump its wares here while we have nothing to sell in exchange while creating forien competition against our own tech industry
Try another flavor besides lib propaganda
Since they have a federally mandated monopoly on news you have to go a little deeper to none federal funded news

Benny how much you get paid per post?
@Anonymous at 1127 pm. I don’t “feel” anything about conservatives and don’t have ill will towards them. That’s the difference between you and I. We may not always agree politically, but I listen to and respect other CANADIAN people’s opinions and don’t wish ill will on them. This is why I try not to respond to people like you. You can’t separate the opinions someone has from how you feel about them. Staying mad against someone I disagree with is just not me. You be you with your “feelings” but it’s not a flex.
In our house (we are retired), we no longer watch american news networks. They saw what happened a CBS and all now follow the trump rules. But we do watch BBC , Canadian and some of the EU news channels. And why, because the deluge of american tv is just too much. Remember Truth, Justice, and the American Way. Well that is dead, all of it, and at 80 years old I want real news and entertainment. not Donald Trump approved tripe
Ben if we were to express how we really feel about you liberal slugs in the comments……….
WOW! A few films made here and there. That will teach the big, bad orange man plus save the economies of Canada and the EU. Is this really why these rich oligarchs flew half way across the globe to discuss? Tell us the fantasy trade agreements that will replace the US as a trade partner.
@Ben haven’t you heard the countries in the EU don’t want us as an Associate Member they voted us out. Carney just won’t accept Canada is not wanted but he will keep begging for scraps because the EU will never give us enough trade to replace the US trade we have lost.
In other words in plain language they have achieved nothing but make big announcements that means nothing because these talks have been happening for years to no avail. What happened to Carney’s promise of the EU will replace the trade loss because of the tariffs again all sizzle and no steak.
The endless comments from conservatives about DEI and who uses which bathroom, even on stories that have absolutely nothing to do with either, only prove how obsessed they are. Apparently, they can’t resist turning every conversation into one about their favourite fixations. Wow!
Man, these fascist pigs at the trough really are deaf to Canadians and there own alike. These pigs are just going to go ahead and shove this through. We should be storming Ottawa by now! Or Montreal where this is happening. Canadians should be furious and going to arms! CARNEY IS ALL BUT GIVING AWAY OUR SOVEREIGNTY and we can do nothing??!!
Most EU nations reject the proposal of Canada as an “associate” member. Another flop by Carney.
Is the paltry sum that is digital trade not the only thing on the table before the summit?
Yes.
Was the summit pure theatre and no substance?
Yes.
Ben, Liberals pretending this trade deal is important is a endless stream of misinformation.
Liberals claiming anything that is deemed “a strategy for dealing with Trump”, regardless of what it is, are supporting an endless stream of misinformation and if it was not extremely clear, Liberals pretending men can identify as women is an endless stream of disinformation just like praise for DEI is an endless stream of suicidal ideation.
You are insufferable.
Absolutely meaningless amount of trade that would be erased by a tiny bump in oil prices.
You people are insufferable.
The only carbon tariff the EU has implemented is on the hot air spewed by conservatives and their endless stream of misinformation.
@Ben We’re not reasonable people. We’re Global News trolls whose parents never loved us. We want Orange Daddy to spank us when we’re bad. Being humiliated by a strongman who wears diapers is deeply exciting to us. You should try it.
What about the new carbon tariffs on Canadian goods the EU has implemented? Notice that isn’t being talked about….
Digital soverignty is economic soverignty and agreement with the EU reduces our dependence on the USA. Reasonable people would agree with this.
