Lack of interest has Saskatoon bowlers concerned about future

Watch the video above: officials are looking at ways to boost interest in bowling

SASKATOON – For the better part of three decades, Lloyd Wiens has been knocking down pins.

“When I played in the 80’s and 90’s it was really hot, we had all kinds of coverage, now we’re starting to get more interest but we’re fighting with all kinds of different entertainment and it makes it a little difficult to bring people in,” Wiens said.

The dip in bowling’s popularity is being felt all over, particularly with tournaments.

After a brief hiatus, the Regina Classic returned a few years ago. With a pay-out last year of over $42,000, it attracted about 150 bowlers from around the country.

“It was down a little bit from the year before but the more interest we get the more the prize money is, it is a 100 % payout which draws a bigger crowd.” said Kevin Clark, a committee member for the Regina Classic .

And other bowling  tournaments around Canada have followed suit.

When it comes to leagues, the competitiveness isn’t there. It’s a big change the Canadian 5-Pin Bowling Association is looking into.

Wiens hopes youthful energy resets bowling down the right lane again because the experience is more than just a game.

“I can tell you a lot more about the people I’ve met from all across the country compared to the games that I’ve played,” Wiens said.

The Regina Classic bowling tournament has one of the biggest pots on tour.  It’s back again this weekend and organizers expect around 150 participants again this year.
