Alberta Bound (Huge NHL Trade)

***The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired veteran goaltender Jean-Sebastien from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for netminder Vesa Toskala and Jason Blake.

Phaneuf a Leaf

Brian Burke and Daryll Sutter have pulled the trigger on a blockbuster!  here's the skinny.

to Toronto:
     Dion Phaneuf
     Fredrik Sjostrom
     Keith Aulie

to Calgary:
     Matt Stajan
     Niklas Hagman
     Jamal Mayers
     Ian White

These are two teams that are struggling this year and while the Leafs may be in next year territory, the Flames are currently holding down the final playoff spot in the West.  This move comes over a month before th NHL Trade deadline.

The 24 year old Phaneuf is making $6.5 million this year.  Sjostrom makes just $750,000.  While the cash heading west breaks down like so:  Stajan $1.75 mil, Hagman $3 mil, Mayers $1.4 mil, $950 thou.  So the cap hit to both teams is virtually a wash.

The Leafs get the blue-chip D-man who was a top ten pick in 2003 and many still consider to have the potential to be a Norris candidate for years to come.  In return, th Flames get back a bunch of guys like they already have.  Players that work real hard but at the end of the day look like each other.

I just can't see the logic behind this one for the Flames.  I'll call Burke and the Leafs the winner on this deal.

Cougars Complete Weekend Sweep

Ryan Sawka scored two goals including the game winner as the University of Regina’s men’s hockey team completed a two-game weekend sweep over the Calgary Dinos with a 4-2 win on Saturday at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.

Sawka scored late in the second period to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead, but Calgary got goals from Brock Nixon and Dan Ehrman in the latter stages of the third to cut the deficit to just one. Sawka iced the game with an empty net goal in the final minute of the game.  Justin Scott opened the scoring for Regina in the first period and Carter Smith extended the Cougars’ lead with his sixth goal of the season midway through the second. Third-year forward Dillon Johnstone assisted on both of Sawka’s goals.  Brant Hilton made 29 saves for the Cougars, while Calgary’s Dustin Butler stopped 18 of 21 shots sent his way.  The win, which gives the Cougars nine out of a possible 12 points since the Christmas break, improves Regina’s record to 8-11-1 and moves the U of R into sixth place in the Canada West standings. Calgary drops to 10-9-5 with the loss.

Cougars Take Out Dinos

The University of Regina’s women’s volleyball team defeated the Calgary Dinos in four sets on Saturday night in a Canada West match at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The Cougars opened the match with a 25-14 win in the first set, but Calgary replied with a 25-21 win in the second.  Regina came out flying in the third set, leading 8-1 at the first media timeout and 16-3 at the second. The Cougars ended up with a 25-15 win in the third and clinched the match with a 25-18 win in the fourth set.

Playing in her final regular season home match as a Cougar, fifth-year middle Beth Clark led Regina with 11 kills. Meagan Onstad, Solveig Nilson, and Kaitlyn Hughes each had eight kills for the Cougars, while Hughes added a match-high 19 digs. Tiffany Herman had 35 assists and 13 digs to record the match’s lone double-double.

The win improves No. 6-ranked Regina’s record to 10-6. The Cougars will need to catch at least one of Brandon (12-4), Manitoba (12-5), or          Alberta (12-6) for the right to host a first-round playoff series.

will end his U of R career as the school’s rally-point era leader in
kills.

NHL Saturday

SOMEBODY HAD TO WIN
Calgary, 0-6-3 in its previous nine games, played in Edmonton, 0-10-2 in its previous 12 games, Saturday night. It was the twelfth matchup in NHL history between two teams that were both on winless streaks of at least nine games.

FLYERS OWN THE ISLANDERS
The Flyers extended their winning streak against the Islanders to 14 games with a 2-1 victory in Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon. The Flyers' 14 straight wins versus the Islanders matches their club record for consecutive victories against one team. They had a 14-game winning streak versus the Kings from 1978 to 1982 and they beat the Thrashers 14 times in a row from 2005 to 2009. Philadelphia is the first NHL team to record winning streaks of at least 14 games against three different opponents.

KESSEL SCORES TWO QUICK ONES
Phil Kessel gave the Maple Leafs a quick 2-0 lead in their game against the Canucks with goals at the 52-second and 3:49 marks. Kessel was the first Toronto player to score two goals in the first four minutes of a game since Mike Walton did so in the first 2:21 against St. Louis on Dec. 30, 1967. Before Kessel, the last player on any NHL team to do that was Ottawa's Jason Spezza versus Montreal on Feb. 9, 2008 (first 1:42).

BURROWS ENDS BIG MONTH WITH A BANG
The Canucks overcame a 3-0 deficit to beat the Maple Leafs 5-3 with Alex Burrows leading the way with two goals and two assists. Burrows finished with 15 goals in 13 games in January. He's the third player in Canucks history to score 15 or more goals in a calendar month in one season, joining Pavel Bure, who did it twice (19 goals in March 1994, 16 in November 1992), and Darcy Rota (15 in March 1983).

FISHER IS MORE THAN JUST A COWBOY CASANOVA
Mike Fisher scored 3:33 into overtime to give the Senators a 3-2 home win over the Canadiens. It was Fisher's seventh career overtime goal and third this season, both of which are Senators records. Fisher's seven OT goals have all been scored in Ottawa. No player besides Fisher has scored more than three overtime goals for the current Senators franchise, and Fisher is the only player in team history to score more than one OT goal in a single season. He scored two overtime goals last season, in addition to the three he's scored this season.

WARD EXCELS IN JANUARY
Cam Ward extended his winning streak to a season-high four games with his 4-2 win over the Blackhawks on Saturday night. Ward was 9-5-0 with a 2.02 goals-against average in 14 games in January, after posting a 5-14-5 record and 3.12 GAA in 25 games this season through the end of December.

QUICK IS THE KING OF THE SHOOTOUT
Jonathan Quick and the Kings beat the Bruins, 3-2, in a game decided by a six-round shootout. Quick lost his first two shootouts this season but he's 8-1 in tiebreakers since then. Quick's eight shootout wins are two more than any other NHL goaltender has recorded this season. (Martin Brodeur is second with six.)

ARNOTT MAKES THEM COUNT
The Predators edged the Thrashers, 4-3, thanks to Jason Arnott's goal seven seconds into the third period which snapped a 3-3 tie. Arnott has scored only two goals in his last 18 games but they've both been third-period game-winners. His goal against the Ducks on January 2 broke a 1-1 deadlock in the middle of the third period in a game Nashville won, 3-1.

FIRST CAREER GOAL IS WORTH THE WAIT
Sami Lepisto scored the first goal of his NHL career to give the Coyotes a 3-0 lead in the first period against the Rangers and it proved to be the game-winner when Phoenix held on for a 3-2 victory. Lepisto's goal came in his 61st NHL game. Entering play on Saturday, he had been one of five active non-goaltenders with at least 60 career games in the NHL but no goals. The others were Ryan Parent, Boris Valabik, Matt Smaby and Brett Festerling.
