Strong words from premier on abolishing immigrant investor program

Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall . Brent McGillivray / Global News

REGINA – Premier Brad Wall is speaking out against the federal government’s plan to scrap the immigrant investor program.

The program offered permanent residency in exchange for financial investment but has been abolished as part of the 2014 budget. The program has been criticized by the federal government as being ineffective.

Quebec has its own similar program and Wednesday’s announcement does not effect it.

“I think the people of Canada and I think the people of Saskatchewan are tired of examples where one province, the province of Quebec, is treated differently and has certain advantages that are not available to the rest of the country,” said Wall.

The premier acknowledges that the federal government has concerns with the program but says Saskatchewan has received more than $160-million for new homes over the past few years, thanks to the program.

Wall plans to ask for Saskatchewan to have its own program similar to Quebec’s but says he is not optimistic the request will be granted.
