UPDATE: Alcohol, speed believed to be factors in serious collision on Yellowhead

EDMONTON – A man was sent to hospital in serious condition after a two vehicle collision on Yellowhead Trail late Wednesday evening.

Edmonton police were called to the scene around 11:30 p.m.

Officers believe a car collided with the back of a bobtail (a tractor without a trailer) near 127 Street while both vehicles were travelling west on the Yellowhead.

Police say the 19-year-old behind the wheel of the car was thrown from his seat and partially through the windshield. Witnesses at the scene provided first aid until paramedics arrived. The man was then rushed to hospital with serious injuries;  he remains in critical but stable condition.

The driver of the truck was not hurt.

Police believe alcohol and excessive speed were factors in the crash. Charges are pending against the driver of the car. His identity has not been released.

The Edmonton Police Service’s Major Collision team is leading the investigation.

A portion of Yellowhead Trail was closed overnight, but re-opened later Thursday morning.
