A man is in hospital with non-life threatening injuries after he was shot on at Royal Oak SkyTrain station during the busy evening rush-hour, TransLink has confirmed.
Drew Snider, a spokesman for TransLink, said shortly after 5 p.m., the man was shot as he was ascending one of the sets of stairways to the central train platform.
"He then boarded an outbound train and made it to Edmonds — that’s where police were attending to him," Snider said.
The Royal Oak station was locked down by police so officers could search for evidence.
"We had to close the main entrance to Royal Oak, but people were getting in and out through the emergency exit," Snider said.
Sgt. Ted De Jager of the Burnaby RCMP said that police are interviewing the victim.
De Jager said that police received multiple 911 calls when the shooting happened, and were at the scene by 5:12 p.m.
The SkyTrain was extremely busy with rush-hour commuters, he said, noting that it was fortunate that no one else was shot in the crowded station.
"We’re interested in hearing from any witnesses, particularly any who may have caught something with their cellphones or cameras," De Jager said.
De Jager said the station was open and the SkyTrain was moving in both directions. The area where the man was shot has been cordoned off.
He did not know whether the station’s security cameras caught any part of the incident.
Police still do not have a suspect — or suspects.
