B.C. announces first public school of traditional Chinese medicine

B.C.'s advanced education minister Amrik Virk gets acupuncture after announcing the province's first public school of traditional Chinese medicine.

B.C.’s first public school of traditional Chinese medicine is coming to Kwantlen Polytechnic University, the ministry of advanced education announced Friday.

The government said the new public program will complement the six existing private schools that teach Chinese medicine in the province and provide another option to learn in the growing field.

Advanced education minister Amrik Virk said a program advisory committee will be formed later this year to guide the development and implementation of the new school. It is not known when the program will begin.

“Government is making solid progress on its commitment to establish the province’s first public school of traditional Chinese medicine,” Virk said. “At the end of the day, our focus is on giving British Columbians more choice and greater options in health care.”

Kwantlen Polytechnic University was chosen to host the program out of the province’s 25 public advanced education schools.

The school said the program will begin with a small class of 20 students, with the potential to grow. The university will also run a clinic out of their campus where students can practice and learn.

The new school, combined with the potential for international partnerships, will expand access to preventative and complementary health-care education, Virk added.

Traditional Chinese medicine parliamentary secretary Richard T. Lee said the new school will help position B.C. as a leader in the field.

The new school will be located at Kwantlen’s Richmond campus. The university has three other locations in the Lower Mainland.
