CALGARY – Calgary Transit says 2013 was a year of record-setting ridership, with 107.5 million customers served.
It’s a five per cent increase from numbers they saw in 2012.
They contribute a number of factors to the increase in riders, such as strong economic growth, the extension of the Blue Line to the northeast and the west line, added service hours and increased ridership by adults and post secondary students.
However, all those extra commuters are posing some challenges.
“I want 107.5 million happy customers, not just 107.5 million customers,” says Doug Morgan, director of Calgary Transit. “It’s important to use to not just drive ridership, but try to find a balance between the two. People see this is a valuable service, not just packing them on and driving them downtown.”
Over the past three years, Calgary Transit has seen a 12 per cent increase in ridership which is double the rate of Calgary’s population growth during this period.
