‘Gravity,’ ‘American Hustle’ dominate Oscar nominations

TORONTO — Gravity and American Hustle lead the way with 10 nominations apiece for the 86th Academy Awards.

Close behind, with nine nods, is 12 Years a Slave.

Oscar nominations were announced early Thursday in Hollywood by actor Chris Hemsworth.

Dallas Buyers Club by Quebec filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallée, was nominated for six awards, including Best Picture.

It will be challenged by American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Gravity, Her, Nebraska, Philomena, 12 Years a Slave and The Wolf of Wall Street.

Four of the nominated films had Canadian, North American or World premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and one — Nebraska — had its North American premiere at the Vancouver International Film Festival.

Montreal’s Martin Pensa is a co-nominee in the Best Film Editing category for Dallas Buyers Club while Toronto-born Andy Koyoma shares a Sound Mixing nomination for Lone Survivor.

For the second year in a row, a Canadian is nominated for Original Score. Toronto’s Owen Pallett shares the honour with U.S.-born William Butler (of Montreal’s Arcade Fire) for Her. Last year, Toronto’s Mychael Danna (Life of Pi) won the Oscar in the category.

Canada’s Sarah Polley failed to earn a nomination for her feature documentary Stories We Tell and Canada was shut out of the Foreign Language category.

Prisoners, from Quebec director Denis Villeneuve, got a Best Cinematography nomination for Roger A. Deakins.

Dallas Buyers Club stars Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto earned nods in the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor categories respectively. Each earned a Golden Globe for their performances.

Also in the running for Best Actor are Christian Bale (American Hustle), Bruce Dern (Nebraska), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave).

Best Actress nominees are Amy Adams (American Hustle), Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), Sandra Bullock (Gravity), Judi Dench (Philomena) and Meryl Streep (August: Osage County).

In addition to Leto, Best Supporting Actor nominations were given to Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips), Bradley Cooper (American Hustle), Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave), Jonah Hill (The Wolf of Wall Street).

Best Supporting Actress nominations went to Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine), Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle), Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave), Julia Roberts (August: Osage County) and June Squibb (Nebraska).

David O. Russell (American Hustle), Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity), Alexander Payne (Nebraska), Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave) and Martin Scorsese (The Wolf of Wall Street) are up for Best Director.

At Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards, 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle won Best Picture (Drama and Comedy respectively).

The nine Best Picture nominees have earned a combined $1.3 billion at the box office — from top-earning Gravity ($675 million) to lowest-earning Nebraska ($8.5 million).

Before Midnight, Captain Phillips, Philomena, 12 Years a Slave and The Wolf of Wall Street are nominated for Adapted Screenplay while American Hustle, Blue Jasmine, Dallas Buyers Club, Her and Nebraska are up for Original Screenplay.

Animated Feature Film contenders are The Croods, Despicable Me 2, Ernest & Celestine, Frozen and The Wind Rises.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug earned nominations in the Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects categories. The Great Gatsby is included in the Costume Design and Production Design categories.

Box office bomb The Lone Ranger managed Oscar nods for Visual Effects and Makeup and Hairstyling. In the latter category it’s up against Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa.
