Investigators say the fire was started by a stove top element which ignited combustibles in the area, then went up the cupboards and eventually throughout the home and to the adjoining homes.

When the fire department arrived, the blaze had already engulfed the townhouse but the mother and five children living in the home all escaped safely.

Careless cooking is Regina’s leading cause of fires with fifty to sixty families in Regina affected each year.
